Leicester Cathedral Gardens gets £1m backing from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)

Leicester City Council has managed to obtain £1m from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to go towards a £2.5m project to create Cathedral Gardens – a new public area outside Leicester Cathedral – and reconstruct Peacock Lane and St Martin’s, a news report in the local media has revealed.

The Leicester mayor, Peter Soulsby, has also announced proposals for the city council to make a contribution of £950,000 towards the overall project costs, and to manage the construction contract which is set to be awarded by mid-October.

Leicestershire County Council has already pledged £250,000 funding to the cathedral. This will pay for a new artwork and a contribution towards the scheme.
