Skills shortages worsening for UK businesses, new REC report suggests

UK firms are increasingly affected by skills shortages caused by the lack of suitable candidates, according to new figures which suggest availability of candidates has fallen for the 41st consecutive month.

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation’s (REC) monthly poll of 400 jobs consultancies found that 28 per cent saw skills shortages for ongoing roles worsen in September.

With just 15 per cent reporting an improvement, an index reading of 42.6 was recorded, where anything below 50 represents a drop in availability. The last time the permanent staff availability index rose above 50 was in spring 2013.

Specific skills in accountancy, architecture, care work, customer service, design engineering, digital marketing, lorry driving, science, supply chain work and toolmaking were reported to be in short supply.
