Japanese giant Hitachi set to relocate rail business from Japan to UK
Japan-based electronics giant Hitachi has revealed plans to relocate its entire global rail business from Japan to the United Kingdom and significantly expand its manufacturing operations at its County Durham site, a recent news report on the matter has revealed.
This move will place Hitachi in a closer geographical vicinity to some of its traditional rivals, such as Siemens, and the Japanese company hopes that the move would help it expand the rail business to 4,000 workers from the current 2,500 and also increase revenue from 2bn euros to 3bn euros ($4bn; £2.5bn) over the next few years.
Furthermore, this decision will also improve the company’s position on the UK market, by becomin a “local” company, rather than a foreign one. Last July, Hitachi won a £1.2bn deal to make the next generation of inter-city trains in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, where it is building a factory that will initially employ 750 workers when it opens next year.
