Co-op reveals plans to double its number of stores over next five years

One of the UK’s most important retailers, the Co-operative Group, has just revealed plans to effectively double its convenience store base over the next 5 years, from the existing 2,000 sites, a news report in the business media has revealed.

The company’s CEO, Mr. Steve Murrell, stated that, despite a diminished level of confidence in the Co-op brand caused by the drug allegations against former bank chairman, the company actually planned to open around 150 stores a year and improve those already there.

The new store push will mean tens of thousands of jobs being created or relocated. Figures from the company’s 2012 report suggest that the group had 72,670 employees in 2,816 stores, but the company’s chief executive also suggested that around 200 of its larger stores may be closed in order to improve its convenience shops.
