12 percent of UK workers’ income is spent on work-related costs
A new research study published by banking powerhouse Santander revealed the fact that workers in the UK collectively spend £67bn per year on costs related directly to their jobs, and these costs are going nowhere but up.
As a news report in the media on this topic has revealed, various expenses related directly to work attendance, such as childcare, commuting, work clothes and computer equipment cost the average full-time employee £2,681 per year, accounting for 12 per cent of their disposable income.
Moreover, these costs are beginning to take an increasingly higher toll on the employee’s available income, since, although wages increased by an average of 1.4 percent, the cost of working also increased by 10 per cent over the past year. Commuting is the greatest cost to workers, followed by childcare-related expenses.
“Earning a living can be an expensive task, particularly against a backdrop of rising living costs. The price of going to work has increased significantly since last year but average salaries have not and, as a result, workers are considerably worse off,” says Alan Mathewson, CEO of Santander Cards.
Given this situation, more and more companies are trying to implement a more flexible approach to employement, especially as far as the employeer’s physical presence at the workplace is concerned.
